Community Outreach
Learning is a community effort that goes beyond the immediate community surrounding the school. Accordingly, the students and I participated in International Education Week which was held from November 14-18, 2011. The students planned many activities and Teacher Two and I developed lessons that emphasized our dual role as teachers from the Georgian and American cultures who were working together to improve the education of Georgia’s students.
We invited TLG staff, the school director, and other local education organizations to visit the school to see the work that students were doing. While none of the invited parties attended or visited our classroom, we did receive a letter of acknowledgement from TLG staff regarding our efforts (see Figure 12); this letter was shared with the students.
The outcomes of our International Education Week activities were also posted on the International Education Week site and can be viewed at: http://www.iew.state.gov.
